Aviation’s Impact on Alaska's Development

Of all industries, aviation has played the largest role in Alaska's development. Before there were roads, there were airstrips upon beaches, gravel, and even meadows. At the Alaska Aviation Museum, visitors can get an up-close look at the importance of aircraft in both civilian and military uses across all areas of the state. Travelers will also learn about bush flying, famous Alaska pilots, and Alaska's role in World War II.

Museum Facilities

The museum comprises four hangars and an outdoor yard, with a dedicated restoration hangar that is worth a visit. Here, volunteers spend their time restoring aircraft to their former glory. Additionally, visitors shouldn’t miss the tower cab along the shores of Lake Hood, where they can go upstairs to hear live air traffic controller communications as planes navigate the Lake Hood Seaplane Base continuously.

Location and Accessibility

Sitting on the shores of Lake Hood, the busiest seaplane base in the world, the museum benefits from its proximity to the Anchorage airport, just about 2 miles away. According to past visitors, it’s an excellent place to start or end your Anchorage trip. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission and Additional Information
