The Atlanta BeltLine: A Comprehensive Overview
Introduction to the Atlanta BeltLine
The Atlanta BeltLine is an expansive, ongoing project aimed at developing a citywide network that includes 22 miles of streetcar rails, 33 miles of trails for walking, biking, and more. It also incorporates 5,600 units of affordable housing and over 1,000 acres of greenspace. This greenspace is either newly added to the city or has been cleaned up, including removing contaminants from the soil. The project is being executed in phases and is expected to be completed by 2030.
Current Attractions and Facilities
As of fall 2024, the BeltLine offers ten parks and ten trails, some of which are still unfinished but accessible. Key parks include:
- Historic Fourth Ward Skatepark: Atlanta's first public skate park, featuring obstacles suitable for skateboarders of all skill levels.
- Historic Fourth Ward Park: A 17-acre greenspace with amenities like a splash pad for kids.
- Gordon White Park: A venue for music events, temporary art installations, and free fitness classes.
- Perkerson Park: Boasts tennis courts, softball fields, and a disc golf course.
- Westside Park: Spanning 280 acres, it includes a playground and a pavilion for events.
The paved trails of the BeltLine are ideal for biking, strolling through nature, or walking by notable locations such as Ponce City Market and Piedmont Park. Walking and bike tours of the BeltLine are available to help visitors learn more about the network and the surrounding communities.
Visitor Experiences
Travelers highly appreciate the currently open BeltLine paths as an excellent place for exercise. The Eastside Trail is particularly popular due to its easy access to bars, restaurants, and abundant street art.
Future Prospects
Upon completion, the entire BeltLine will encircle the perimeter of Atlanta's city center. Currently available trails are open in the north, south, east, and west sections of Atlanta, with parks scattered along these trails providing several access points. Utilize the BeltLine's interactive map to plan your visit. For ongoing updates on the BeltLine's construction progress, visit its official website.
Hours of Operation
The sections of the BeltLine that are currently open are accessible 24 hours a day, every day of the year. However, businesses along the route maintain their own operating hours. Bike tours are scheduled for Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. and last approximately three hours. Walking tours occur on select days on different trails; be sure to check the online calendar of events for detailed information. While walking tours are free, donations are welcomed.
