Originally developed in the 1970s in Two Harbors, the buffalo milk cocktail has gained such popularity that it now boasts its own food trail. This delightful and creamy beverage is made of bananas, Kahlua, vodka, crème de cacao, and crème de banana. – Danielle Bauter

Two Harbors: A Rustic Escape

Located on the island's western end, Two Harbors stands out for its rugged and remote charm as compared to Avalon. The area provides a distinct rustic allure and fosters a laid-back, relaxed ambiance with its small population and limited development. Visitors encounter a strong sense of community and a slower pace of life here.

Unique experiences in Two Harbors include camping under the stars, enjoying beachfront bonfires, and relaxing in hammocks with breathtaking ocean views.

Outdoor Activities

For outdoor enthusiasts, Two Harbors offers an array of activities. Popular pursuits include snorkeling, Frisbee golf, and paddleboarding. Hikers can tackle the Trans-Catalina Trail, a rugged and scenic 38.5-mile backpacking trail stretching across Catalina's interior, connecting Two Harbors with Avalon. This strenuous hike typically takes around three days to complete, though shorter segments like the Harbor to Harbor trail (5.4 miles from Two Harbors to Little Harbor) are also available.

It's important to secure a hiking permit before setting off on any trails. For a more relaxed experience, consider renting a beachfront palapa at Harbor Sands.

Dining at Harbor Reef Restaurant

Situated in the village of Two Harbors, the Harbor Reef Restaurant is an ideal spot to unwind after a day of exploration. The restaurant features stunning views of Isthmus Cove, where visitors can observe sailboats bobbing on the water. The menu includes a variety of seafood dishes, as well as burgers, steaks, and pasta.

Dining Options and Atmosphere

Dine indoors or enjoy the outdoor patio. Adjacent to the restaurant, the Harbor Reef Saloon offers a selection of refreshing cocktails and a smaller menu of sandwiches, wings, and soups. While many patrons praise the generous portions and delicious food, some mention occasional service issues and slightly high prices.

Accommodation Options

The Two Harbors Campground is perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just a short walk from the village. It features 44 tent-only campsites suitable for various group sizes and offers basic amenities, including picnic tables, fire pits with grates for cooking, cold water showers, and chemical toilets. Thirteen tent cabins, accommodating up to six people each, are also available, though guests must bring their own sleeping bags.

In addition to camping, Two Harbors offers other overnight accommodations such as the Banning House Lodge, a cozy 12-room bed-and-breakfast, and two vacation rental properties.

How to Get to Two Harbors

During the summer, visitors can reach Two Harbors from Avalon via the Cyclone power boat, operated by the Catalina Island Co. For those departing from the mainland, the Catalina Express ferry offers transportation to the island.
