Overview of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center opened its doors in 2004 along the banks of the Ohio River, a historically significant location. The Ohio River historically marked the divide between the southern slave states and the northern free states following Pennsylvania's abolition of slavery. Many slaves crossed this river from Kentucky to Cincinnati as part of the Underground Railroad. Today, the Freedom Center narrates the story of slavery in America through several exhibits, offering a comprehensive overview of three centuries of history and an in-depth look at the Civil War era. Additionally, the center educates visitors about contemporary slavery still present in the world.

Visitors to the museum often describe their experience as moving and emotional. The museum boasts a high concentration of exhibits, and many recommend allocating at least three hours to fully explore its offerings. Despite seasonal renovations that may temporarily close certain floors, as observed by visitors in January 2025, the overall experience remains impactful.

Admission and Tickets

Regular Admission

Admission for adults is priced at $16.50, tickets for children aged 3 to 12 are $11.50, and senior admission costs $14.00.

Fee-Free Days

The museum offers free admission on the third and fifth Sundays of the month, as well as on Juneteenth and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. However, tickets for these fee-free days must be reserved in advance.
