Motown Museum: A Timeless Musical Journey

Introduction

An entire genre – or at least sound – was born in the space of the small Detroit home that is the centerpiece of the Motown Museum. A blue and white sign, reading "Hitsville U.S.A," hangs above the similarly painted building. With gold records by the Supremes and the Temptations, this former Motown recording studio became a hit-making machine from 1959 to 1972. The retro-style interior has been left much the same from those magic music-making days. Additionally, the museum displays instruments, recording equipment, artifacts, photographs, and more.

Guided Tours

Note: If you want to see any part of the museum, you'll have to join a guided tour.

Many visitors say the wealth of experience and information received once inside is worth every minute of your time and every penny of your money. Reviewers particularly praised the tour guides, who they said helped to transport museum-goers back in time to the age of Motown. Don’t be surprised if your docent breaks out into song!

Expansion Project

You'll likely notice the expansion project that's underway behind the Hitsville U.S.A. home. This $75 million project called Hitsville NEXT is set to open in summer 2026, further cementing the Motown Museum as one of the top things to do in Detroit. When the expansion is complete, it will add an additional 40,000 square feet to the museum and will feature interactive exhibits, recording studios, a performance theater, and more.

Location and Transportation

You'll find the museum on West Grand Boulevard near the New Center neighborhood. Recent visitors mentioned that street parking around the museum can be a bit challenging. Consider taking the bus (several routes stop within walking distance of the house) or simply request an Uber.
