Queens Garden Trail
Beginning at Sunrise Point, Queens Garden is a 1.8-mile out-and-back trail that takes travelers 320 feet down into the canyon amongst hoodoos. For an extra treat, take a short spur trail to spot Queen Victoria, a hoodoo that resembles a statue of the famous British queen.
Navajo Loop Trail
Meanwhile, the 1.3-mile Navajo Loop Trail departs from Sunset Point. Using a series of switchbacks, the moderate trail winds its way down into the canyon. The main sights are Thor's Hammer, a large hoodoo on the Two Bridges side of the hike, and Wall Street, the second half of the loop, which is a slot canyon filled with Douglas firs. Keep in mind: Wall Street closes when there's both precipitation and freezing temperatures, so plan a trek for spring or summer to increase your chances of completing the full hike.
Combining the Trails
Though you can hike the trails individually, past travelers recommend combining the two trails into a single 3-mile loop. They noted that the hilly terrain is a welcome challenge, and the scenic views make up for the extra effort. Ensure you take plenty of water and rest breaks, and avoid the hike if you're an unfit or novice hiker. Previous visitors also warned that Queens Garden gets crowded with visitors, especially families, as it's an easy trail to reach the canyon.
Recommended Route
If you choose to combine the trails, the National Park Service suggests descending via the Queens Garden Trail and then hiking up the Navajo Loop Trail. This route provides a safer descent into the canyon and offers exquisite views of the amphitheater. You can start at either Sunrise or Sunset points, both of which are stops on the park's shuttle route. Both points have restrooms and drinking water, though availability is seasonal. Find more information on the National Park Service website.
