Exploring the Appalachian Trail: A Hike to Charlies Bunion

An Adventurous Trek

Park visitors looking to experience a slice of the Appalachian Trail can begin their journey at Newfound Gap. This starting point offers an 8-mile round-trip hike to Charlies Bunion, a scenic rock formation uncovered by wildfire and erosion in the early 1900s. This location provides panoramic vistas that are perfect for capturing memorable photos and enjoying the beauty of the Smoky Mountains. The name, Charlies Bunion, is believed to come from Charlie Conner, an Appalachian Trail supervisor in the 1920s, whose poor footwear allegedly caused a bunion. It's advisable to wear comfortable and supportive hiking shoes on this trek.

Trail Highlights

As hikers make their way, they'll traverse through hardwood and high-elevation spruce-fir forests. Additionally, they will pass Icewater Spring Shelter, a classic wooden hut where Appalachian Trail thru-hikers spend their nights. This shelter is a notable stop along the way, offering a glimpse into the life of long-distance hikers.

Hiker Experiences

Recent travelers have enjoyed the opportunity to hike a portion of the famous Appalachian Trail. While the hike to Charlies Bunion requires some effort, many have found the stunning views to be well worth it. However, hikers should temper their expectations, as the Smoky Mountains are often shrouded in fog. It’s possible to reach the overlook only to find oneself enveloped in clouds. On the bright side, patience often pays off, and the fog may clear to reveal breathtaking vistas.

Location Details

The trailhead for Charlies Bunion is located at the Newfound Gap parking lot on U.S. Route 441. It can be found at the left end of the overlook, with a restroom available near the start.
