Details
Daufuskie Island offers Hilton Head vacationers a unique getaway experience. Made popular by Pat Conroy's novel/memoir "The Water is Wide," the island is located west of Harbour Town across the Calibogue Sound. Its remote, car-free environment and rich history make it feel like a world away and a step back in time. Accessible only by boat or ferry, Daufuskie Island has about 500 full-time residents and is adorned with centuries-old Spanish moss-draped oak trees and pristine, crowd-free beaches. The island was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 because of its historical significance.
History of Daufuskie Island
In the 1730s, Daufuskie Island was home to several plantations tended by enslaved individuals from West Africa. After the Civil War, freed slaves established a close-knit community known as Gullah, characterized by its distinctive culture and language blending southern English with native African dialects. Due to the island's isolation, Gullah culture thrived, and its influence is still evident today.
