Introduction
Flora and fauna abound at Armand Bayou Nature Center, one of the largest urban wilderness preserves in the U.S. Covering over 2,500 acres, the center boasts forests, wetlands, and prairies, with 370 different species of animals, including birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. There is a plethora of activities, events, and programs to enjoy here.
Activities and Programs
Many of Armand Bayou's guided offerings occur on weekends, so visitors should plan accordingly. A variety of tours are available, including:
- Kayak tours
- Pontoon boat cruises (day, sunset, or moonlight options)
- Guided photo hikes
- Nighttime hikes to spot bats, deer, fireflies, and owls
- Nature hikes focusing on specific animals like fireflies
Trails
For those who prefer self-guided exploration, the center offers 5 miles of trails. Among them:
Discovery Loop Trail
This half-mile trail is ideal for visitors with limited time. It leads directly to the nature center's main attractions, including:
- John P. McGovern Children's Discovery Area
- Interpretive Building with live animal displays
- Bison viewing area
- Martyn Farm Site, a recreation of 1800s Texas farm life
Other Trails
Additional trails offer a glimpse into various ecosystems:
- 1.32-mile Martyn Trail through forested wetlands
- 1.5-mile Lady Bird Trail along the edge of the bayou

Hours and Admission
The center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission fees are:
- $7 for adults
- $5 for children aged 4 to 12 and seniors
Additional fees apply for activities such as boat rides and guided tours. On-site parking is available free of charge. Note that the center does not sell water, so visitors should bring their own and wear insect repellent during warmer months.
