Introduction to Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve

Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve's proximity to Bolsa Chica State Beach makes it a necessary addition to any beach visit. However, don't let that be the only reason why you stop by. This serene 1,400-acre coastal estuary boasts a diverse array of habitats including marshes, dunes, islands, mudflats, and open waters. These areas are frequented by hundreds of bird species, coyotes, and raccoons, among other wildlife. Visitors may even occasionally spot sea lions and green sea turtles. The reserve also offers 5 miles of hiking trails and features an interpretive center with maps, educational exhibits, and a gift shop.

Past visitors have noted that this protected area offers a tranquil setting ideal for activities such as jogging, hiking, and biking. Many visitors particularly appreciated the numerous bird-watching opportunities that the property provides.

Best Times for Bird Watching

If birding is your primary reason for visiting, aim to come in the winter (between November and February) or in the summer (between April and August) for the best chance of spotting birds.

Getting to Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve

The reserve is located a few miles outside of Downtown Huntington Beach, making it most accessible by car. Fortunately, both of the public parking lots are free to use, and there is no entry fee for the reserve.

Guided Tours

Complimentary guided tours led by local nongovernmental organizations are available every month on select Saturdays and Sundays.
