One of the most popular activities in Key West is taking a photo with the colorful buoy marking the southernmost point of the United States. This striped buoy, located at the intersection of Whitehead and South streets, is just 90 miles north of Cuba. Next to it, there are two plaques: one dedicated to the Cubans who lost their lives attempting to reach America and another detailing the history of the Black community at the Southernmost Point.

Reality Check

It's important to note that this buoy doesn’t actually mark the true southernmost point. The actual location is slightly west of the buoy on land owned by the Navy, which is not accessible to the public.

If you plan to visit the buoy, consider arriving early in the morning to avoid crowds. Another option is to join a Key West tour, many of which include a stop at this landmark. Access to the buoy is free and available 24/7.
