Introduction

When the Tennessee Theatre opened in 1928, it was heralded as the "South's most beautiful theatre." Now on the National Register of Historic Places and recognized as the Official State Theatre of Tennessee, the venue hosts a variety of events such as classical music performances, vintage film screenings, dance performances, and touring Broadway shows. Local organizations, including the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and the Knoxville Opera, frequently use the theater for their performances.

Architecture and History

Recent visitors have praised the venue's stunning architecture and rich history, noting that attending an event there is like stepping back in time. The building, designed by the Chicago architectural firm Graven & Mayger, features a mix of globally inspired motifs. The interior showcases a Spanish-Moorish style with French-style chandeliers and Italian terrazzo flooring in the lobby. Additionally, the Tennessee Theatre was one of the first public places in Knoxville to offer air conditioning.
