Donner Memorial State Park and Emigrant Trail Museum

The Donner Memorial State Park and Emigrant Trail Museum honor one of the darkest moments in American pioneering history. Here, you'll find a prominent stone pedestal commemorating the Donner Party, the legendary group of pioneers who endured the harsh Sierra Nevada winter of 1846 to 1847. Originally consisting of nearly 90 emigrants en route to California, the party encountered a severe snowstorm, leading to tragic consequences. Only half of the pioneers survived, with some resorting to cannibalism. Near the Emigrant Trail Museum, a 22-foot-tall stone marker stands in remembrance.

Exploring the Museum

For more in-depth information about the tragic Donner Party, visit the Donner Memorial State Museum. The museum features intricate dioramas that detail the history of railroad development in the Sierra Nevada region. It's a great attraction for history enthusiasts, though some recent visitors feel parts of the story are sanitized to be more "kid friendly."

Outdoor Activities

Besides the museum, recent visitors highly recommend exploring the park's outdoor offerings. The park boasts numerous hiking and snowshoeing trails, spanning more than 8 miles. Furthermore, you can enjoy swimming, boating, and fishing within the park's scenic environment.

Location

The Donner Memorial State Park and the Emigrant Trail Museum are located about 15 miles northwest of Kings Beach and 3 miles west of Truckee, California.

Hours and Admission

The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset, with the visitor center operating every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking costs $10 per vehicle per day. In addition to the museum and visitor center, the park offers campsites with restrooms and picnic areas. For more detailed information, visitors can check the Donner Memorial State Park website.
