Historical Significance and Architecture of the Arkansas State Capitol

In 1911, the General Assembly convened for its first session in the near-complete Arkansas State Capitol. It would take another four years for the neoclassical structure to be fully completed. The 247,000 square feet building boasts marble walls and floors, a limestone exterior, and a striking gold-leaf-covered cupola.

During a visit, travelers can explore exhibits that detail the capitol's lengthy construction process, Arkansas' role in the civil rights movement, and the state's contributions during wartime. Guests can book a free guided tour of the building or opt for a self-guided tour using pamphlets available at the on-site visitor center.

Gardens and Monuments

Be sure to wander through the surrounding gardens, which feature over 50 varieties of roses and a monument dedicated to the Little Rock Nine. For those looking for a more comprehensive experience, time your visit to the capitol to coincide with a legislative session, where you can observe lawmakers in action.
