Introduction to the Adamson House and Malibu Lagoon Museum
If this is your first trip to Malibu, a visit to the Adamson House and Malibu Lagoon Museum is a must. This site, recognized as a National Historic Site and a California Historic Landmark, is nestled between Malibu Creek and the beach. The land originally belonged to the Chumash Indians until the late 18th century before it came under the possession of the affluent Rindge family, who owned 17,000 acres and 20 miles of coastline. In 1929, their daughter and her husband commissioned the construction of a Spanish Colonial Revival-inspired home, known as Adamson House. According to the California Parks Department, this house is situated at one of the most picturesque beach locations in Southern California. Opened to the public in 1983 as a museum, the house not only showcases the family's history but also features stunning Spanish and Moorish designs, including bottle glass windows, vibrant tiles, and hand-carved doors.
The Malibu Lagoon Museum
The structure that once served as a garage (with space for five cars!) has been transformed into the Malibu Lagoon Museum. This museum provides insightful information about the Chumash Indians and their early days in Malibu.
Visitor Feedback
Visitors highly recommend waiting for a tour to fully experience the interior, noting that the $7 fee is an extraordinary value. The detailed architecture, intricate tilework, and knowledgeable docents receive consistent praise.
