Overview of 17-Mile Drive

Just north of Carmel-by-the-Sea, 17-Mile Drive is one of the most picturesque roads in the country. Weaving around the Monterey Peninsula, the breathtaking drive is exactly 17 miles long.

This iconic route crosses through the world-famous Pebble Beach Golf Links, considered to be the No. 1 golf course in America. Along the drive, you’ll witness captivating views of beach bluffs facing the Pacific Ocean, Del Monte Forest with its towering Monterey pine trees, and numerous multimillion-dollar homes.

Things to See and Do

Scenic Pit Stops

This journey is all about the experience rather than the destination. Be sure to bring your camera and soak in the views. There are numerous parking areas along the way where you can stop and admire various points of interest. Don’t miss the Lone Cypress, a tree believed to be 250 years old, and one of the most photographed trees in the world.

Spanish Bay

Spanish Bay is another worthy stop on 17-Mile Drive. Visit to see its raised boardwalks, perfect for a shoreline stroll, or catch the bagpiper who performs every day in the late afternoon, rain or shine.

Pebble Beach Resorts

Many parts of the drive are surrounded by the Pebble Beach golf courses. It’s enjoyable to visit the Pebble Beach Resorts complex for a glass of wine or an upscale meal at The Lodge at Pebble Beach, Casa Palmero, or The Inn at Spanish Bay. Across from The Lodge is the Pebble Beach Visitor Center, where you can learn about the history of the area and indulge in on-site shopping.

Admission

Just know that taking this drive isn’t free as it’s within a gated community. Admission costs $12.25 per vehicle, and motorcycles are prohibited. However, this fee is waived for resort complex guests and is reimbursed to anyone spending $35 or more at Pebble Beach Resorts restaurants, excluding Pebble Beach Market.
