Key Highlight
Though The Breakers is often considered the "must-see" of the Newport mansions, you shouldn't overlook Marble House. Many locals and travelers refer to it as their favorite thanks to its over-the-top opulence and Chinese tea house.
Introduction to Marble House
While The Breakers mansion is the most well-known historic home in the area, another must-see property along Cliff Walk is Marble House.
Historical Background
Like The Breakers, Marble House was originally owned by the Vanderbilt family. Inspired by Versailles' Petit Trianon building, this grand home was named for the 500,000 cubic feet of marble used in its design. Along with its lavish interior, Marble House also offers stunning water views.
Location and Access
Marble House is situated along Bellevue Avenue, approximately 2 miles south of central Newport. Visitors can park for free at the on-site parking lot, and cyclists can utilize the bike rack. Those without a car can use the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority's No. 67 trolley.
Hours
Marble House is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from mid-February through December. The house and grounds close one hour after the last tour admission (4 p.m.).
Tickets
A standard ticket to visit Marble House costs $25 per adult and $10 for children ages 6 to 17. Children 5 and younger can tour the mansion for free.
