Discover the Pismo Preserve: Trails and Scenic Overlooks
Nature lovers will revel in the 11 miles of trails and scenic overlooks at the Pismo Preserve. This expansive area is full of wildlife and funded by a nonprofit called the Land Conservancy. There are trails for hikers of all levels.
Trail Recommendations for Hikers
Previous visitors recommended the following trails based on experience levels:
- Pismo Discovery Trail - Ideal for beginners.
- Peekaboo Trail - Suitable for intermediate hikers.
- Vamanos Canyon Trail - Best for advanced hikers.
As you explore these trails, you'll pass through woodland areas and open pastures that look over the Pacific Ocean. You'll likely see cows grazing on some of these open lands, and you may even come across horses as horseback riding is permitted on some trails.
Exclusive Hiking Trails
Two trails are dedicated solely to hikers:
- Vamanos Canyon Trail
- Lover's Point Trail
All other trails allow for mountain bikers.
Exploring the 900-Acre Pismo Preserve
The Pismo Preserve spans 900 acres, stretching from Irish Hills Nature Reserve in the north to Point Sal State Beach in the south. Each of these areas offers unique activities:
- Irish Hills Nature Reserve - A mountainous area popular among equestrians.
- Point Sal State Beach - A great place for fishing, hiking, bird-watching, or just relaxing on the sand. Note that swimming isn't recommended due to strong waves.
Visitor Information
You can park and enter the Pismo Preserve at the south end of Mattie Road off of exit 191B. Entrance is free, but hours vary as the preserve is closed at night to protect wildlife. You may bring your dogs on the trails as long as they stay on a leash.
For your convenience, there are restrooms and water fountains located at the start of the trails near the south end of the property. For more information, visit the official website.
