Overview of the Great Salt Lake

Spanning about 35 miles in width and 75 miles in length, the Great Salt Lake is the largest natural saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere. The lake derives its name from the high salinity of its water, a result of the evaporation process which leaves behind salty mineral deposits. Visitors and residents of Salt Lake City can enjoy numerous outdoor activities such as hiking, picnicking, swimming, boating, and fishing in the area.

Access Points

Great Salt Lake Park

Great Salt Lake Park is one convenient access point, located just 20 miles west of Salt Lake City. The park features a marina, a small beach trail, and essential facilities such as showers, concessions, and restrooms.

Antelope Island State Park

Another favored access point is Antelope Island, a state park located northwest of the city. Besides offering similar scenery to Great Salt Lake Park, Antelope Island is renowned for its diverse wildlife, including bison and antelope. Visitors can also explore the Fielding Garr Ranch House, an 1800s-era home on its original foundation. To reach the island, one must drive around the lake's southeast shore via Interstate 15 to exit 332, amounting to about 60 miles one-way.

Operating Hours

From April to September, Great Salt Lake Park is open daily from sunrise to sunset. During the remainder of the year, the park is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
