The Cabrillo National Monument
Located at the southernmost tip of Point Loma, the Cabrillo National Monument is a historical landmark that features a statue of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. Cabrillo was the first European explorer to navigate the California coast in 1542. About 10 miles southwest of downtown San Diego, this monument offers more than just a memorializing effigy; it provides stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, downtown San Diego, Coronado, and, on clear days, the mountains of Tijuana, Mexico.
Scenic Views and Outdoor Activities
Monument Views
Visitors often journey to the monument for its incredible panoramic scenes. From this vantage point, you can enjoy sweeping vistas of the surrounding landscapes.
Point Loma Tide Pools and Coastal Trail
After soaking in the views from the top, you can either walk or drive down Cabrillo Road to explore the Point Loma Tide Pools or take a scenic walk along the coastal trail. The 2.5-mile Bayside Trail, descending into the east side of the point and ending just above the bay waters, offers another scenic route.
Historical Exploration
For those more inclined towards history, the National Park Service offers ranger talks that delve into the story behind the Cabrillo Monument. Additionally, a short walk south on Humphreys Road brings you to the restored Old Point Loma Lighthouse.
