The Santa Fe Opera House

The Santa Fe Opera House is a world-renowned venue that plays host to a variety of operas each summer. Since 1957, the company has presented operas – including comedies, dramas, and tragedies – every July and August in a succession of three structures. The current venue is an open-air theater surrounded by the Sangre de Cristo and Jemez mountain ranges, providing spectacular views and accommodating around 2,100 spectators.

Patrons can arrive up to three hours before the show. Many take advantage of this time to tailgate in the surrounding parking lots with picnics, gourmet meals, and drinks. The opera also offers special dining options, such as premade tailgate picnics and preview buffet dinners for a set price.

Visitor Experiences

Recent visitors have praised the Santa Fe Opera for its impressive singers and picturesque setting. They consider it a must-see Santa Fe experience, even for those who aren't regular opera-goers. Both travelers and residents agree that tailgating is essential. Guests often dress up, sip sparkling wine, and enjoy "chic eats," so be sure to bring food and drinks to partake in the festivities.

Some visitors warn of potential thunderstorms, but note that lightning can create a dramatic backdrop for the show. Additionally, bringing a sweater or wrap is advisable in case of an evening chill.

Location and Visiting Information

Located 7 miles north of downtown Santa Fe, the opera house welcomes visitors for performances and backstage tours. The opera season runs from July through August, and due to its popularity, booking tickets in advance is highly recommended.

Tickets

Tickets can be purchased through the box office via phone from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday (also on Saturdays in season) and are available online. Individual ticket prices range from $50 to hundreds of dollars. For tour availability and pricing, call the Opera House. The venue offers free on-site parking.
