Explore South Mountain Park: A Natural Treasure in Phoenix

Key Highlight: South Mountain Park boasts three mountain ranges and more than 50 miles of scenic trails.

A Vast Natural Oasis

Arizona offers a seemingly endless array of outdoor experiences, and Phoenix's South Mountain Park is no exception. The park spans more than 16,000 acres, making it one of the largest municipally managed parks in the United States.

Hiking Opportunities

Hikers should consider the Dobbins Lookout summit – the highest accessible point in the park. Standing at 2,330 feet, the lookout provides panoramic valley views of city landmarks like Camelback Mountain and downtown Phoenix. You can access Dobbins Lookout via the 2.5-mile, moderately difficult Holbert Trail.

Alternative Ways to Explore

If your feet need a break, the park's trails are also open to horseback riding and mountain biking. Along with its hiking trails, the park features an education center with interpretive exhibits. From the center, you can embark on the Judith Tunnell Accessible Trail, which comprises two barrier-free, half-mile loops.

Landmarks and Attractions

Mystery Castle is another interesting landmark within the park. This 18-room home was built in 1945 by Boyce Gulley for his daughter Mary Lou. It’s open for tours from October through May.

Scenic Drives

In addition to its trails and landmarks, the park is popular for its beautiful drives. Be aware that the roads are very popular with cyclists, so drivers should be prepared to share the road and keep an eye out for two-wheeled transport.

Park Information

South Mountain Park is located in south Phoenix, about 7 miles south of downtown. Daily parking and entrance hours are from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. From June 1 to Sept. 30, the Pima Canyon trailhead parking lot entrance has extended hours until 9 p.m. Trails remain open until 11 p.m. There is no entrance fee.

For more information, visit the city's website.
