Overview of Oak Creek Canyon
Scenic Oak Creek Canyon is often regarded as a smaller cousin to the Grand Canyon. This picturesque drive is one of the most beautiful routes you can take while visiting Sedona. You can either leave Sedona and head north to Flagstaff or exit from Interstate 17 in Flagstaff and head south to Sedona. The approximately 14-mile drive features numerous beautiful trails, vista points, picnic spots, campsites, and fishing opportunities.
The switchbacks along the route can be daunting, so it's essential to observe the speed limit and drive with caution. Regardless of the season, the drive offers stunning views. During the winter, however, you might encounter snowstorms at higher elevations, which can lead to the closure of State Route 89A. Therefore, it's advisable to check the weather forecast if snow is expected. In the fall, the changing leaves create a breathtaking scene that is well worth photographing.
In spring, summer, and fall, the canyon experiences a high volume of visitors and traffic, so plan your visit accordingly.
