Overview of Weedon Island Preserve
The Weedon Island Preserve spans 3,190 acres and features a diverse array of aquatic and upland ecosystems. Visitors can explore the area through guided hikes, boardwalks traversing tidal flats and mangrove forests, and fishing on the pier.
Cultural and Natural History Center
Located deep within the preserve, the Cultural and Natural History Center boasts an exhibit gallery called "Connecting People and Place." This gallery promotes environmental reconnection and offers insights into the region's earliest Native Americans. Designed with input from Native American descendants, the center features 6,000 square feet of interactive exhibits. Additionally, the center provides interpretive hikes, workshops, and various programs.
The hours of operation for the center are Thursday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Visitor Activities
Recent visitors have highly praised kayaking through the mangroves and bird-watching along the boardwalk. Fishing and picnicking are other favored activities. The fishing pier and surrounding oyster bars are excellent spots for catching sea trout, snook, and sheepshead. The preserve features four picnic areas and a pavilion, which are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Operational Hours and Additional Information
The preserve is open daily from 7 a.m. until dusk, with the exact closing time posted at the entrance each day. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. For more details, visitors can check the official Weedon Island Preserve website.
