Hiking Stowe Pinnacle
Hiking enthusiasts can challenge themselves with Stowe Pinnacle, a 3.7 mile out and back trail in the C.C. Putnam State Forest. With an elevation gain of about 1,600 feet, this difficult trail typically requires several hours to complete under good weather conditions. It is subject to seasonal closures and is only partially marked. Additionally, there are a few sections that require rock scrambling.
Trail Conditions and Experiences
Seasonal Variations
Recent hikers have noted that this hike is both lovely and challenging. During the winter, the trail tends to be very snowy and icy. Some winter visitors were unable to complete the route. Those who managed to reach the summit typically wore spikes or crampons and noted that the views were worth the effort. In warmer months, the trail can become muddy. Although this hike is challenging and not suited for casual ramblers, several travelers brought children along.
Dog-Friendly Trail
The trail is dog-friendly; while leashing is required, off-leash dogs are still commonly seen. Hikers should be prepared for these conditions and ensure their pets are well-behaved around other trail users.
Access and Trailheads
Stowe Pinnacle is located about 4 miles southeast of Stowe and can only be accessed by car. There are two trailheads, both offering free nearby parking. If you prefer a slightly shorter hike, opt for the Pinnacle Meadows lot, which shaves about a mile off the route. The trail is free to access and is open 24 hours a day. Since the area is subject to seasonal closures due to weather conditions, it is advisable to check the Trail Finder website for the current operating status before embarking on your hike.
