A Historic Neighborhood

If you want to gain a deeper understanding of Tulsa's pivotal role in American Black history and culture, a visit to the Greenwood District is a must. Famously dubbed "Black Wall Street" in the early 20th century, this neighborhood in northern Tulsa was home to prosperous Black businesses, including grocery stores, hotels, doctor's offices, and theaters, supporting approximately 10,000 residents. Tragically, in June 1921, it was destroyed during the Tulsa Race Massacre. White mobs looted and burned businesses and homes throughout Greenwood in retaliation for an alleged incident between a Black teenager and a white woman in downtown Tulsa.

Historic Sites and Modern Attractions

Today, the Greenwood District hosts several historic sites dedicated to telling the story of "Black Wall Street," alongside a collection of Black-owned businesses like Wanda J's Next Generation Restaurant and Silhouette Sneakers & Art. Among these historic sites is the Greenwood Cultural Center, showcasing photos and survivor accounts from the massacre. Other significant landmarks include the John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park, featuring bronze sculptures commemorating the victims, and the Mount Zion Baptist Church, which was rebuilt in 1952 after being destroyed in the massacre.

Greenwood Rising: A Modern Museum Experience

For a more immersive history lesson, visitors should not miss Greenwood Rising. This free museum, opened in 2021, features a variety of interactive and tech-savvy exhibits narrating the neighborhood's story before, during, and after the massacre. Past visitors have been particularly impressed with Greenwood Rising, describing it as a necessary experience for every American. Reviewers appreciate the interactive exhibits and the utilization of modern technology, such as holograms, to effectively convey the neighborhood's historical and cultural significance.
