Exploring Poplar Grove Plantation
Introduction to Poplar Grove Plantation
Poplar Grove Plantation is part of the National Park Service's Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, which extends from Wilmington in the north to Jacksonville, Florida, in the south. The Gullah Geechee people are descendants of Africans who were enslaved on rice, indigo, and Sea Island cotton plantations along the lower Atlantic coast. Renowned for their distinct Creole language, the Gullah Geechee are also celebrated for their unique arts, crafts, music, food, and religious traditions. A visit to Poplar Grove Plantation, which was formerly a sweet potato and peanut plantation, offers insightful learning about the Gullah Geechee culture.
Agricultural Contributions and Historical Significance
The agricultural expertise of the Gullah Geechee who labored on the plantation was pivotal, leading to the local sale of sweet potatoes and peanuts that supplemented the diets of the enslaved community. Beyond their agricultural input, the enslaved individuals were responsible for constructing the manor house that stands today. This three-story manor house, dating back to 1850, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can also explore two heritage art studios on-site, featuring a basket gallery and a blacksmith shop, along with an agricultural exhibit showcasing a peanut thrasher and information on peanut production. Families will find the on-site stables, home to various 19th-century farm animals, a delightful attraction.
