Firehole Canyon Drive: An Overview

Firehole Canyon Drive stands out since it takes visitors past a waterfall and to a Yellowstone swimming hole for safe and comfortable swimming during the summer (most stream and lake water within the park is too frigid). Close to Madison Junction on the west side of the park, Firehole Canyon Drive is situated off of Grand Loop Road. The seasonal 2-mile, one-way drive snakes along a particularly scenic stretch of the Firehole River, offering fantastic photo opportunities throughout.

Scenic Attractions

While exploring Firehole Canyon Drive, be sure to check out the roaring 40-foot-tall Firehole Falls waterfall that tumbles through lava rock, located a short walk from the small parking area. The Firehole Swimming Area opens mid-summer when the water is the calmest and warmest. The swimming area features a small rocky beach that leads into the water.

Visitor Experiences

Many recent travelers say that a detour along Firehole Canyon Drive is certainly worth it, especially since it's relatively short. Several visitors found this stretch of the Firehole River to be quite pretty and, depending on the time of year, not very crowded. However, some noted that when the swimming area is open, the road can be congested with cars due to the lack of a dedicated parking lot, so it's advisable to plan accordingly.

Accessibility and Amenities

Located near Madison Junction, about 16 miles east of Montana's West Yellowstone, Firehole Canyon Drive has no set hours of operation, though the area is closed to swimming after dark. This road closes in fall and remains closed until spring due to snow. Access to this road is included in the park admission fee of $35 per vehicle. Visitors can park along the one-way road and then take the stairs to the beach. This area is equipped with a vault toilet only, and the closest facilities are located at the Madison Information Station along with the Madison Museum. Both the beach and the underwater terrain at this swimming area are quite rocky, so water shoes are advised.

Important Safety Information

It's important to know that the swimming area does not have a lifeguard, and jumping off the rocks or cliffs is prohibited. Pool toys like rafts, noodles, and tubes are also prohibited. Additionally, no food, drinks, or alcohol are allowed, along with bathing in the river. Life vests are recommended when visiting the Firehole Swimming Area, and bathing suits are required.
