Exploring The Narrows: Zion National Park's Must-See Hike

Nestled within Zion Canyon, The Narrows is a breathtaking hiking destination characterized by striated, orange-red walls that tower 1,000 feet overhead. This slimmest section of the canyon is traversed by the Virgin River, making it one of Zion National Park's most popular hikes.

Getting Started: Riverside Walk

The adventure begins with the one-mile Riverside Walk, a wheelchair-accessible trail that offers a tranquil start to the journey. However, the trail eventually merges into the Virgin River, where hikers will be wading or even swimming upstream through the slot canyon.

Optimal Hiking Seasons

Most visitors choose to hike The Narrows in the summer or late fall when water levels are at their lowest and the air temperatures are warmer. It's essential to check in with a park ranger for the water flow rate, as high flow rates can close the Narrows trail. Additionally, be mindful of weather forecasts since sudden storms can trigger life-threatening flash floods. Spring, with its increased snowmelt runoff and cooler water temperatures, is generally less ideal for hiking.

Preparation is Key

Ensure you seal any valuables in a waterproof bag, as water levels can reach up to your waist or even higher depending on the time of year. The National Park Service notes that waters can rise to chest height. Hikers are also advised to bring a hiking stick and waterproof shoes due to the rocky and slippery terrain. For those in need, gear such as dry pants and waterproof shoes can be rented from outfitters in Springdale. To best experience The Narrows and avoid crowds, plan to arrive early, ideally before 8 a.m.

Transportation and Permits

Hikers can access The Narrows by taking the free Zion Canyon Shuttle to the No. 9/Temple of Sinawava stop, the last point with restrooms and drinking water. From the Temple of Sinawava to Big Stream, hikers can enjoy an all-day, 10-mile round-trip hike without a permit. For a more extended 16-mile downstream hike from Chamberlain's Ranch, an NPS wilderness permit is required. These permits can be obtained online or at a visitor center. This longer route also necessitates arranging personal transportation. Access to The Narrows is included with a seven-day park entrance fee of $35, and there are no set hours of access. However, note that the Zion Canyon Shuttle does not operate late in the evening, and it's a 7.7-mile walk back to the visitor center.
