Discovering Otter Cliff

Experience the Stunning Views

If you're seeking Acadia's rugged, cliff-edged and spruce-lined shorefront, Otter Cliff is an essential stop. This iconic spot along the Park Loop Road features a massive 110-foot-high granite precipice, offering some of the most breathtaking ocean views on the East Coast. Be cautious near the edge as you navigate through the spruce trees topping the cliff. During the summer, adventurous rock climbers scale the granite walls, and whale pods can often be seen spouting offshore. In the fall, large flocks of ducks gather in the waves before migrating south for the winter. Despite its name, you won't find sea otters here, as park rangers believe the name actually refers to river otters.

Visitor Insights

Recent visitors emphasize that a stop at Otter Cliff is a must for the spectacular views alone. Additionally, Otter Cliff is notably less crowded compared to other top park destinations like Sand Beach. Travelers appreciate the relative tranquility, finding their visit particularly peaceful. Although you won't witness the sunrise directly from the ocean, sunrise at Otter Cliff is reported to be especially beautiful.

Getting to Otter Cliff

Access via Park Loop Road

Otter Cliff is accessible year-round via Park Loop Road and is situated less than a mile south of Thunder Hole. If you're already at Sand Beach, you can hike the Ocean Path to Otter Cliff, passing Thunder Hole along the way.

Transportation Options

You can also reach Otter Cliff using the free Island Explorer shuttle (Route No. 3 and 4 stop here). If you prefer to drive, there is a small parking area across the road from the cliff, where you'll find granite steps leading to the cliff side.
