Introduction
The Schoodic Peninsula, home to Schoodic Point, is the only part of Acadia National Park situated on the mainland. Despite being just an hour’s drive from Bar Harbor, it remains an under-visited gem. Recent travelers cherish its tranquility, attributing this to its fewer crowds compared to Mount Desert Island. Schoodic Peninsula is replete with craggy shorelines, granite headlands, and spruce-fir forests, all contributing to its secluded charm.
Getting Started
Starting Point: Schoodic Woods Campground
Begin your adventure at the Schoodic Woods Campground Welcome Center and Ranger Station, where you can collect information. This spot is ideal for parking if you plan to explore the park's 8.3 miles of gravel bicycling paths or the loop road, or hike trails such as the Buck Cove Mountain Trail or the Lower Harbor Trail.
Facilities and Amenities
The Frazer Picnic Area, located less than a mile from the welcome center, offers various amenities including tables, fire rings, water fountains, restrooms, and a dock. The ensuing 6-mile stretch features a one-way road with a two-way spur to Schoodic Point. This route includes designated pull-outs to enjoy the stunning vistas, and a visit to the Schoodic Institute's Rockefeller Welcome Center, which has exhibits on local flora, fauna, and history.
Exploring Schoodic Point
Schoodic Point Experience
Most visitors are drawn to Schoodic Point’s ledges to witness the dramatic surf crashing against the pink granite shoreline. Beyond the waves, the western views offer breathtaking sights of Cadillac Mountain and the glacier-rounded peaks of Mount Desert Island.
Hiking Trails
The peninsula offers seven hiking trails, including the leisurely Sundew Trail departing from the Schoodic Institute campus. This trail meanders through woodlands and emerges on pink granite ledges. At Schoodic Head's summit, three trails converge: the Schoodic Head Trail, the Anvil Trail, and the East Trail. These trails traverse spruce-fir forests and pine woodlands, presenting rocky outcroppings with ocean views. The less-strenuous Alder Trail, connecting the Blueberry Hill parking lot to the Schoodic Trail, is particularly popular with bird watchers.
Recommendations from Recent Travelers
Frequent visitors highly recommend scheduling a visit to Schoodic Point for its remarkable wave spectacle and stunning views. However, they advise keeping a safe distance from the surf line. For those without personal transportation, a ferry service operates between Bar Harbor and Winter Harbor during the summer. Additionally, the Island Explorer's Route 8 shuttle provides connections from the ferry terminal, looping through this park section with stops in Prospect Harbor and Winter Harbor.
Schoodic Point Entrance Fee
Accessing Schoodic Point is free with your park pass.
Schoodic Woods Campground
Located north of Schoodic Point, the Schoodic Woods Campground offers hike-in, RV, and group tent sites for a nightly fee (separate from the park entrance fee). Guests will find electricity and/or water at select sites. The campground is open from May through October, with reservations required through Recreation.gov.
