Visiting Carowinds: A Guide for Charlotte Tourists
Is Carowinds a Must-See Attraction?
I wouldn't say Carowinds is a "must-see" for someone visiting Charlotte, as it isn't particularly unique as theme parks go. However, if you're traveling with kids or looking for a way to cool off at a water park, it's a fun way to spend a day.
Are There Relaxed Rides for Those Who Avoid Intense Roller Coasters?
Yes, there are a variety of more mellow rides, primarily located in the Camp Snoopy area of the park, which caters to young children. The live entertainment is also geared towards young kids and families. If intense roller coasters aren't your thing, I recommend heading to the Carolina Harbor Waterpark. This water park features plenty of slides, but also wave pools and the Carolina Harbor Shore Club, an adults-only area that opened in 2025.
How to Stay Cool During a Summer Visit
If you're visiting in the summer and need to cool off, spending time at the water park is a good idea. If you plan to spend most of your day on the roller coasters at the main theme park, be prepared for a lot of sun exposure, as there are no indoor attractions to provide relief.
Best Times of Year to Visit
Summer is enjoyable if you want to take advantage of the water park, offering a nice break from the heat and humidity. However, weekends will be the busiest. For a unique experience, consider visiting on select nights from mid-September to early November when the park hosts its annual SCarowinds Halloween event. This event allows you to experience the park in the offseason with mazes, scare zones, and some of the park's most popular rides open at night.
