The USS Cod Submarine Memorial

Located next to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, this National Historic Landmark is a must-see. The World War II sub was placed in commission on June 21, 1943, under the leadership of Cmdr. James Dempsey and is famous for performing the only international submarine-to-submarine rescue in history. It still stands exactly how it did years ago during wartime, with no alterations.

Exhibits and Tours

Visitors can enjoy a self-guided or guided tour of the submarine, as well as view exhibits such as the Mark 14 steam-driven torpedo, a five-bladed bronze submarine propeller, and a search periscope. Make sure to stop by the memorial and pay respects to the nearly 4,000 men and women who lost their lives aboard U.S. submarines.

Visitor Reviews

Visitors often refer to the USS Cod as a hidden gem and perfect for family outings, with kids particularly enjoying the deck gun. Many find the best part of the visit to be walking around a genuine, historic, unrefurbished WWII submarine and engaging with informative volunteers. It’s important to note that access is through the original hatchway, with narrow hallways and steep ladders, which may present challenges for small children, handicapped individuals, and those who are claustrophobic.

Visiting Information

The USS Cod Submarine Memorial is located on the banks of Lake Erie in downtown Cleveland. It is easily accessible via public transportation, taxi, car, or by foot if you're already in the downtown area. The L-line trolley, the Blue and Green rail lines, and multiple buses stop nearby.

Opening Hours and Admission

The submarine is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from May 1 to September 30. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $9 for veterans and seniors, and $6 for kids ages 6 to 18. The USS Cod is continually acquiring new military weapons, so visitors are encouraged to check the website for updates before visiting.
