Overview

Named for the mountain laurel shrub that blooms throughout the park, Laurel Falls Trail stands as one of the most favored paths. The trail's namesake waterfall features an upper and a lower section, separated by a walkway at the base of the 80-foot upper falls. Most hikers choose to trek to the falls and back, totaling a 2.6-mile round trip. However, the trail continues through a beautiful hardwood forest for 3.7 miles before it meets the junction with Cove Mountain Trail. Be prepared to spend up to two hours for the round trip due to the uneven pavement and steep incline. Given its popularity, the trail is busy year-round, especially on weekends and during the peak summer season.

Trail Experience

Recent visitors have shared mixed reviews on the trail's safety. While some noted the steep drop-offs and rocky terrain as somewhat dangerous, more experienced hikers found it manageable. Regardless of skill level, all agreed that the trail is incredibly scenic and perfect for photography, especially in May and June when the mountain laurel blooms. Many hikers warned of limited parking, necessitating additional walking to reach the trailhead. The area is also known for its bear population; it's advisable to carry bear spray and avoid leaving food behind.

Location

Laurel Falls Trail is located 3.5 miles from the Sugarlands Visitor Center, off Little River Road. There are parking areas available on both sides of the road, but these tend to fill up quickly during peak seasons and on weekends.

Good to Know

Pets and bicycles are prohibited on the trail. Access to Laurel Falls is free of charge. For additional information, visit the NPS website.
