Explore Serenity at Indianapolis' State Park

A Natural Escape Within the City

Surrounded by gentle hills and a forest filled with oak, beech, and walnut trees, it's easy to forget you're still in Indianapolis at this former military base turned state park located on the city's northeast side. Although you might hear the faint rumble of cars on 56th Street, you're more likely to notice the song of a nearby sparrow or the crunch of leaves underfoot. Despite attracting thousands of bikers, hikers, and outdoor lovers each year, the 1,700-acre park is spacious enough to offer a sense of solitude. It's not uncommon to have much of the 14 miles of trails to yourself. For an enhanced experience, you can also sign up for guided hikes listed on the park's website. If you're inclined towards horseback riding, you can enjoy an additional 4 miles of equestrian-specific trails as well.

Recreational Activities

Fall Creek runs through the park, making it a popular spot for anglers who can fish both in the creek and in a large pond at the center of the park. There is also a dog park located at the back end of the property, while a popular golf course sits in the southeast corner. Veterans and history enthusiasts will appreciate the park's Museum of 20th Century Warfare, which features exhibits about the lives and history of the soldiers who once served at the old military base.

Visitor Impressions

Reviews of the park are overwhelmingly positive, with many visitors praising its tranquility. Parkgoers appreciate the numerous trails, particularly the paved paths ideal for biking and strollers. Others have noted that the shorter trails are perfect for kids to practice hiking, making it a family-friendly destination.

Hours

The park is open from 7 a.m. to dusk year-round.

Tickets

Entry to the park costs $9 per vehicle, or $7 for vehicles with Indiana license plates. Pedestrians, equestrians, and bicyclists need to pay $2 each.
