Kansas City Zoo Overview

The Kansas City Zoo initially opened its doors in 1909 with a humble assortment of animals: four lions, three monkeys, a fox, a wolf, a coyote, a badger, a lynx, an eagle, and several birds. Over the years, it has grown exponentially, transforming into one of the most highly regarded zoos in the nation. Today, the zoo boasts a variety of exhibits including the Helzberg Penguin Plaza, the interactive Stingray Bay, and a commendable chimpanzee habitat praised by Jane Goodall. Visitors have the opportunity to engage in daily activities such as penguin feeding, sea lion shows, lorikeet feeding, and zookeeper chats. Moreover, the zoo hosts special events like penguin marches and both indoor and outdoor overnight campouts.

Visitor Experiences

Recent visitors have lauded the zoo for its cleanliness and the extensive range of exhibits spread across its grounds. However, they also advise wearing comfortable footwear due to the park's vast 202-acre area, which requires considerable walking. It is unlikely that guests will be able to see everything in a single visit. Additionally, past visitors recommend bringing your own snacks and lunches for a full-day visit to avoid the relatively high cost of food within the park.

The Kansas City Zoo operates from 9:30 a.m. to either 4:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m., depending on the day of the week and the season.

Tickets

Admission prices are as follows: children aged 2 and under enter for free; ages 3 to 11 cost $20; ages 12 and older are $22; and seniors can enter for $20. For an additional $9, visitors can purchase an unlimited rides pass for the KCZoo Railroad, African Sky Safari, and Endangered Species Carousel.
