An Overview of the Preserve

Nature enthusiasts will find a haven at this expansive preserve. Situated 30 miles northeast of Old Naples and approximately 45 miles south of Fort Myers, the sanctuary encompasses 13,000 acres of marshlands. Here, you can explore areas populated with 600-year-old trees, otters, alligators, and a diverse array of bird species.

Boardwalk Adventures

The sanctuary features a 2.25-mile boardwalk that winds through various ecosystems such as pine flatwoods, wet prairies, around marshes, and eventually into the largest old-growth bald cypress forest in North America. Visitors can enjoy a self-guided tour along the boardwalk, offering a rare glimpse into the pre-development wilderness of Florida. Additionally, a range of guided programs is available, including early birding tours, night tours, swamp walks, and guided forest meditations.

Visitor Experiences

Recent visitors have expressed joy over the diverse flora and fauna across the different ecosystems and have praised the on-site amenities. The preserve offers ample parking, a well-maintained visitor center, and restrooms. Visitors advise arriving early to avoid the afternoon heat as sections of the boardwalk are not shaded by trees.

Operating Hours

The sanctuary operates daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last admission at 3 p.m. from Dec. 16 through April 30. From May 1 through Dec. 15, the last admission is at 1 p.m., except on days with inclement weather.

Ticket Information

General admission is priced at $17 for adults and $6 for children aged 6 to 14, while children aged 5 and under can enter for free. Note that food and beverages (except bottled water) are not permitted on the boardwalk. A picnic area is available near the parking lots. Although there are no restrooms on the boardwalk itself, facilities are available at the main building, which also houses a gift shop and a café.
