Explore Oceano Dunes: A Natural Sandbox for Adventurers
The Oceano Dunes offer a massive natural sandbox that is perfect for a full day of adventure. The rolling hills of white sand provide stunning ocean views and a sense of tranquility far removed from California's bustling urban areas. Previous visitors have remarked that driving along the dunes in a four-wheeled vehicle creates an unforgettable experience.
Off-Roading Adventures
To start your off-roading adventure, head to the Post 2 checkpoint, situated 1 mile south of Pier Avenue. Registering your vehicle for off-roading costs just $5. While many people choose to drive their cars directly onto the beach, exploring the dunes on an ATV is another popular option.
Renting ATVs
Numerous ATV rental locations can be found at the west end of Pier Avenue. Both Steve's ATV Rentals and Arnie's ATV Rentals have received positive reviews from past visitors, who praised the helpful staff at both establishments. The staff provide instructions on riding the ATVs and guidance on where to explore. They're also available to assist you if you encounter any difficulties.
Rental prices vary based on the type of ATV and the duration of your rental. Prices typically start at around $60 for a two-hour rental. Recent visitors recommend booking a morning ride to avoid the crowds and the midday heat.
Other Recreational Activities
In addition to off-roading, Oceano Dunes offers a variety of other recreational activities. Visitors can enjoy swimming, surfing, fishing, and hiking. Popular hiking trails include the easy Oso Flaco Lake Trail and the moderately challenging Sand Highway OHV Trail. Camping is also allowed on the beach or amid the dunes south of Post 2.
