Discover the Holzwarth Historic Site
A preserved ranch in the Rocky Mountains, the Holzwarth Historic Site offers visitors an immersive glimpse into the lives of 20th-century homesteaders. The primary focus of this historic site is the expansive history of the Holzwarth family. The family relocated to the Rockies in 1917 and earned their livelihood through various tasks, including ice cutting for refrigeration and milling lumber.
Transformation into a Dude Ranch
Following the inauguration of Fall River Road (currently known as Old Fall River Road), the Holzwarth family experienced a surge in travelers. This prompted them to transform their property into a dude ranch, initially named Holzwarth Trout Lodge and later renamed Never Summer Ranch. In 1974, The Nature Conservancy purchased the property and eventually transferred ownership to the National Park Service.
A Step Back in Time
Past visitors have remarked that stepping into the Holzwarth Historic Site feels akin to traveling back in time, largely due to the preserved old fencing and farm equipment displayed at the entrance. Situated off Trail Ridge Road, the site is described by recent travelers as a quick and easy excursion from a nearby parking area.
Visitor Information
The park provides tours of the historic site from mid-June through Labor Day weekend, though previous visitors have noted that the buildings are not always accessible. Access to the Holzwarth Historic Site is included with admission to Rocky Mountain National Park. For additional details, visitors can refer to the National Park Service's website.
