Attraction Introduction

Old Fall River Road is a historic, one-way scenic drive located in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. Completed in 1920, this gravel road offers stunning views of the park’s alpine landscape, winding from Horseshoe Park to the alpine tundra near the Alpine Visitor Center. Spanning approximately 11 miles, Old Fall River Road provides a more intimate and less traveled experience compared to Trail Ridge Road. As you ascend to an elevation of over 11,000 feet, you'll encounter lush meadows, dense forests, and breathtaking vistas.

Visiting Tips

Old Fall River Road is typically open from early July through late September, weather permitting. It's best to visit early in the morning to avoid traffic and ensure ample time to explore the numerous pullouts and hiking opportunities along the way. A popular stop is Chasm Falls, a picturesque waterfall located approximately 2.5 miles from the starting point. Be sure to bring your camera for the incredible photo opportunities and pack a picnic to enjoy at one of the scenic overlooks.

Precautions

Visitors should be prepared for a slow and steady drive, as the road is narrow, winding, and unpaved. Vehicles longer than 25 feet are prohibited due to the tight curves. Ensure your vehicle is in good condition, particularly the brakes and tires, and keep an eye on the weather, as conditions can change rapidly at high altitudes. Additionally, be aware of wildlife on the road, as elk and other animals are frequently seen in the area. Finally, bring plenty of water, wear layers, and understand that cell service can be sparse.
