Explore the Telfair Academy: A Blend of Art and History
If you appreciate art forms from the 19th and 20th centuries, or simply need a break from the Georgia heat, a visit to the Telfair Academy is a must. Originally built in 1819 for Alexander Telfair, this mansion-turned-museum offers a comprehensive look at various art forms. It houses four primary art forms: paintings, architecture, sculpture, and printmaking. The museum includes works from the Impressionist period, plaster casts of notable sculptures like the Venus de Milo, and period furniture from the Telfair family’s collection. As the first public art museum in the South, this marble-clad institution holds a diverse array of pieces.
Highlights of the Telfair Academy
The standout attraction at the Telfair Academy is Sylvia Shaw Judson’s renowned Bird Girl statue, famously featured on the cover of John Berendt’s bestselling book, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." Recent visitors have expressed their enchantment with the Telfair Academy, often describing it as a "must-see" destination in Savannah. Many visitors particularly appreciated that the admission fee for Telfair Academy also includes access to the other Telfair sites, such as the Jepson Center and the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters. This allows travelers to explore all three locations with a single, discounted ticket.
