Giant Forest

Giant Forest Museum

Begin your visit at the Giant Forest Museum, which provides a comprehensive overview of the giant sequoias, the surrounding meadows, and the area's human history. The museum is situated in the historic Giant Forest market building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Hiking Trails

A series of hikes are available in the Giant Forest, with options ranging from short one-hour walks to extensive daylong treks. According to the National Park Service, visitors highly recommend longer hikes like the 13.4-mile Alta Trail or the multi-day 65-mile High Sierra Trail to avoid the summer crowds. Please note that these trails are designed for experienced hikers, and a wilderness permit is necessary for overnight stays. Additionally, Redwood Canyon and Muir Grove offer excellent opportunities for extended hikes.

General Sherman Tree

The Giant Forest is also home to the renowned General Sherman Tree, the largest living tree in the world by volume.

The free museum operates 365 days a year during daylight hours, with opening times varying by season. There are several parking lots near the museum, and visitors can also utilize the Green and Gray routes (Routes 1 and 2) of the free park shuttle for convenient access.
