Overview of the Smithsonian's National Zoo
More than 1,800 animals reside at the Smithsonian's 163-acre National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute. The zoo hosts a diverse array of species, ranging from Asian elephants to cheetahs to sea lions. As you stroll beneath the Orangutan Transport System (called the O Line), keep an eye out for orangutans swinging along the cables between the steel towers.
Exhibits and Attractions
Amazonia Exhibit
If you are intrigued by animals native to South America, head over to the Amazonia exhibit. This area is home to creatures like titi monkeys and various species of frogs.
Great Cats Exhibit
The Great Cats exhibit features majestic predators such as Sumatran tigers and African lions, among others.
Kid-Friendly Attractions
For families, the zoo also offers a playground and other kid-friendly attractions. During the holiday season, don't miss the ZooLights exhibition, where animal lanterns and light displays illuminate the park after dark.
Visiting Tips
The zoo's enjoyable atmosphere and broad selection of animal species make it a popular destination, particularly during the spring and summer seasons. Be prepared for long lines at the food vendors, which can be somewhat overpriced. However, one of the best features of the zoo is that admission is free.
Getting to the Zoo
The most convenient and cost-effective way to reach the Smithsonian's National Zoo, located in the Woodley Park neighborhood about 2.5 miles north of downtown D.C., is by taking the Metro's Red Line to either the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan station or the Cleveland Park station. Alternatively, the L1 and L2 buses stop at the main entrance on Connecticut Avenue.
Parking and Transportation
Visitors can also choose to drive to the zoo and park in the limited spaces available for a flat fee of $30. Additionally, Capital Bikeshare has multiple stations in the vicinity for those who prefer to bike.
Hours and Admission
The zoo is open every day (except Christmas Day) from 8 a.m. to either 4 p.m. or 6 p.m., depending on the season. Be aware that reduced hours may apply for exhibit buildings, shops, and food vendors. While admission is free, entry passes are required and must be reserved in advance online.
