Exploring the Serene Beauty of Kolob Canyons

Introduction to Kolob Canyons

Travelers looking to escape the crowds in Zion Canyon will enjoy a day in the northwestern Kolob Canyons. Situated about 40 miles north of Zion Canyon, Kolob Canyons feature parallel, narrow box canyons that create 2,000-foot cliff walls from the mountain peaks. The 5-mile stretch of Kolob Canyons Road offers breathtaking views, making it evident why this section of the park was named Kolob, which in Mormon scripture means "residence closest to heaven." Visitors are greeted with verdant desert canyons, waterfalls, and towering Navajo sandstone peaks. For hiking enthusiasts, there are three out-and-back trails that range in length from 1 to 14 miles.

Accessibility

This area of the park is easily accessible from Interstate 15, and it experiences significantly less foot traffic compared to Zion Canyon. The views and scenery here are just as impressive. A must-do hike is the mile-long Timber Creek Overlook Trail, which offers stunning panoramic views.

Visitor Information

Kolob Canyons is located about 17 miles south of Cedar City, Utah, and is approximately an hour's drive from Zion Canyon. This district features its own visitor center, open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and a seasonal campground. Access to Kolob Canyons is included in the park's entrance fee. Restrooms are available at the Kolob Canyons Visitor Center, while vault toilets are located at the Taylor Creek trailhead, South Fork parking lot, and Kolob Canyons Viewpoint.

Winter Visits

During winter, Kolob Canyons Road may be closed due to snowy or icy conditions. It's important to note that Kolob Canyons are not accessible via the park's main entrance; visitors must enter this part of the park from the west entrance. For more information, visit the Zion National Park's website.
