The Legacy of Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Since its inception in 1909, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has been a cornerstone of motorsports. Each Memorial Day weekend, it hosts the iconic Indianapolis 500, where drivers compete in a grueling 200-lap race around the historic 2.5-mile oval track. Recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, the Speedway offers a myriad of racing events beyond the Indy 500, including the Sonsio Grand Prix, the Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational, and the NASCAR Cup Series.
The racing season at the Speedway spans from May through October, with varying schedules and ticket prices. For the most comprehensive and up-to-date race information, as well as ticket purchases, visit the Speedway's official website. While on-site parking is available, some events may incur a parking fee.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum
Updated and renovated in 2025, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is an excellent way to delve into the rich history of racing. The museum features galleries that cover the span of racing history, from the museum's beginnings to a display of winning cars and tales of the Indianapolis 500. It also hosts a series of rotating exhibits, ensuring there's always something new to see.
Museum Tickets and Hours
Entry to the museum requires timed tickets, priced at $25 for adults and $18 for children aged 6 to 16. Kids under 5 can enter for free. Although reservations are not mandatory, they are highly recommended, particularly during race weeks. The museum operates from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Tours of the Speedway
Visitors can choose from several tour options to explore the Speedway. The narrated Kiss the Bricks tour, lasting 30 minutes, includes a lap around the track and is a favorite among many visitors. Other available tours include the Victory Podium tour and seasonal golf cart tours. However, tours are not offered daily, so it's advisable to check the calendar for availability. While the Kiss the Bricks tour is well-loved, those less interested in racing might find it less engaging.
Tour Tickets
Tickets for track tours are priced at $15 for adults and $8 for youths aged 6 to 16. Children 5 and under can join the tour for free with the first child. Note that a museum ticket is required to take any track tour. Parking at the museum is complimentary unless there's an event at the IMS. To learn more about the tours or to book tickets, visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum's website.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway and its museum are conveniently located approximately 5 miles west of downtown Indianapolis.
