Introduction
One of Maui's most popular hiking trails, the Pipiwai Trail, offers an array of natural wonders. Situated along the Road to Hana, it resides in the scenic Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park. The trail is approximately a 4-mile round-trip journey, passing through vibrant tropical vegetation, a bamboo forest, and two stunning waterfalls: Makahiku Falls and the 400-foot Waimoku Falls. Hikers also traverse over footbridges and boardwalks across 'Ohe'o Stream Gulch, famously known as the "Seven Sacred Pools." The Pipiwai Trail is moderately challenging, with an 800-foot elevation gain, and can take up to three hours to complete.
Trail Description
The Pipiwai Trail is renowned for its stunning beauty. As you hike, you'll witness cascading waterfalls and experience the serenity of the bamboo forest. Despite the breathtaking scenery, the hike itself is not easy. Wearing sturdy shoes is crucial as sections of the trail can become slippery, especially after rainfall. It's important to note that the National Park Service locks the parking gate at the end of the day, even if cars are still inside.
Getting There
To reach the Kipahulu District parking lot and trailhead for the Pipiwai Trail, you'll need to drive about 10 miles south from the town of Hana. If you don't have access to a vehicle, you will need to arrange a tour since no public transportation services this area.
Hours
The park is open 24/7 daily, while the nearby Kipahulu Visitor Center operates from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Tickets
Admission to the national park costs $15 for pedestrians and $30 per car. Reservations must be made online in advance. If you plan to enter the park between 3 and 7 a.m. for sunrise, a reservation and a $1 fee are required.
Be mindful of the weather conditions, as this part of the island is known for being hot, humid, and often rainy. Make sure to bring plenty of water, a hat, mosquito repellent, and sturdy hiking shoes, especially in case you encounter mud. Arriving early (before 10 a.m.) is recommended to avoid crowds and secure a parking spot. For more detailed information on the Pipiwai Trail, check the National Park Service (NPS) website.
