Discover Palm Springs and the Scenic San Jacinto Mountains

The city of Palm Springs is nestled in the shadows of the San Jacinto Mountains. These majestic, snowcapped peaks are among the highest in Southern California and offer breathtaking views from the Coachella Valley floor. However, the most spectacular vistas are seen from the summit at Mt. San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness Area.

Experiencing the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

To access the park, embark on a 10-minute journey aboard the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. The tram cars rotate slowly, providing 360-degree views of Chino Canyon. At 8,516 feet, the tram reaches the top, where visitors can enjoy various activities. Hiking is popular, with over 50 miles of trails, including routes to San Jacinto Peak. During winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are available before descending the mountain.

Mountain Station Amenities

If hiking isn't your preference, the tramway’s Mountain Station offers two restaurants, a cocktail lounge, a snack bar, observation decks, a natural history museum, two documentary theaters, and a gift shop.

Tickets and Pricing

To avoid lengthy ticket lines, purchase tram passes in advance on the attraction's ticket page. Although only a portion of tickets is available online, on-site sales remain an option. Adult tickets cost $36.95, children's tickets (ages 3 to 10) are $20.95, and seniors (65 and older) pay $33.95. These prices include a $2 online processing fee. Parking near the ticket office is available for $15 per vehicle, payable by cash or card (bills over $20 are not accepted).

Visitor Tips

The weather at the summit is typically 30 to 40 degrees cooler than at the desert floor, so dressing in layers is advisable. This significant temperature drop is especially pleasant during the hot summer months.

Operating Hours

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway operates daily with hours that vary by season. Generally, the first tram ascends at 10 a.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, and at 8 a.m. from Monday to Friday. The last tram up is at 8 p.m. from Thursday to Sunday, and at 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

The base tram station is located about 6 miles west of downtown Palm Springs and is best accessed by car. For additional details on amenities, opening hours, and more, visit the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway website.
