Introduction
On your way to the park, plan a stop in Pioneertown, a working set for Wild West movies and TV shows in the 1940s and ‘50s. On "Mane Street," you’ll find a slew of stores, including a general store and a barbecue restaurant, plus false fronts, such as a bank and jail. – Emily Hochberg
Joshua Tree National Park is an expansive and otherworldly oasis covering nearly 800,000 acres in the Mojave Desert. The park features a scenic thoroughfare, allowing visitors to explore either through a picturesque drive with quick stops for walks and photos or a multiday visit for in-depth exploration. Whether camping in the park or staying in nearby Twentynine Palms, the park offers numerous picturesque hikes suitable for all skill levels.
Popular Hikes in Joshua Tree National Park
The Hidden Valley Nature Trail is a highly favored park attraction. This easy 1-mile loop begins at a boulder-lined entrance, descending into a flat valley amid lush desert vegetation. Another excellent option for beginners is the Cholla Cactus Garden, featuring a quarter-mile flat loop with a partially raised walkway, providing an up-close look at the spiky cacti. Additionally, with the park’s location in the Little San Bernardino Mountains, the 500-foot paved loop leading to Keys View offers a stunning view of the Coachella Valley.
Tips for Visiting Joshua Tree National Park
Whether hiking or just driving through, park rangers recommend bringing plenty of water due to the desert's hot and arid climate. It’s also advisable to bring food; enjoying a picnic at one of the many tables can be a pleasant experience, particularly since there is no food or drink available for purchase inside the park.
Hours
Joshua Tree National Park is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, although the nature center and three visitor centers operate on more limited hours. The park is located less than 40 miles east of Palm Springs and is accessible through the Joshua Tree or Twentynine Palms entrance.
Tickets
A vehicle permit costs $30 and grants entrance to the park for seven consecutive days. Motorcycle permits are available for $15, and entry on foot or by bike costs $15 for seven-day admittance. The park offers numerous facilities, including campgrounds, bookstores, restrooms, and several picnic areas. For more detailed information, refer to our Joshua Tree National Park travel guide.
