Explore the Gulf Islands National Seashore

Pristine Shoreline and Activities

This undeveloped and preserved stretch of sand and sea in the Gulf of Mexico, spanning from Cat Island in Mississippi to Okaloosa in Florida, is beloved by both locals and visitors for its pristine shoreline. The Florida section of the seashore is divided into six distinct areas, each offering a unique array of sites ranging from relaxing beaches to historic forts. Guests can enjoy a variety of activities such as hiking, biking, kayaking, snorkeling, wildlife-watching, and ranger-led tours.

Visitor Impressions

Recent visitors have described the Gulf Islands National Seashore as a beautiful and wild stretch of sand, often referring to it as a "treasure" among the more developed beaches in the vicinity.

Getting There

You can access the Gulf Islands National Seashore by taking U.S. Route 98. (As of spring 2021, U.S. Route 98 is closed for construction. Instead, visitors should take Florida State Road 281 to reach the seashore.) Once you arrive, there is a fee of $25 per vehicle or $15 per person if arriving on foot or by bicycle. You also have the option to purchase your pass in advance here.

Important Information

Keep in mind that access hours differ by area and season. Although restroom facilities are available within the Gulf Islands National Seashore, there are no places to buy food or drinks, so it is advisable to bring your own supplies. While you're there, you might consider a trip to Fort Pickens, situated at the westernmost point of Santa Rosa Island, or the more easily reachable Fort Barrancas. For more details, visit the National Park Service's website.
