Overview of Indian Canyons
Located 5 miles south of central Palm Springs, Indian Canyons encompass Palm Canyon, Murray Canyon, and Andreas Canyon. These canyons are situated on the reservation lands of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. Collectively, the three canyons offer 60 miles of serene hiking and walking trails amid stunning desert landscapes.
Things to Do at Indian Canyons
Hiking and Scenic Routes
The trails primarily wind through barren desert terrain, creating an experience reminiscent of being on another planet. One of the routes leads to a waterfall sheltered by majestic palm trees.
Native American Art and Wildlife Watching
Aside from hiking, visitors can purchase authentic Native American artwork or pottery at the Palm Canyon trading post. Andreas and Murray canyons are ideal for wildlife watching, where you might spot endangered species like the Peninsular desert bighorn sheep and the Least Bell's vireo bird.
Other Attractions
While in the vicinity, consider exploring attractions operated by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. These include the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum (opened in 2023), Tahquitz Canyon, Indian Canyons Golf Resort, Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa Rancho Mirage, and Agua Caliente Casino Palm Springs. All these sites are located on or near the reservation.
Tips for Visiting
With desert temperatures often exceeding 100 degrees in the summer, it's crucial to bring plenty of water and sunscreen. It's also recommended to wear comfortable closed-toe shoes. If you prefer to keep your feet dry, avoid the Murray Canyon Trail as it concludes at the Seven Sisters Waterfall.
